23” Sugar Mill Series #1 Ride Cymbal. 3145 grams. In celebration of my 3rd year in business and a particularly good year for myself personally and the business, I wanted to celebrate with a new stamp on this series cymbals. Also thought it would be meaningful to include a silver certificate of authenticity. Something I don’t think I’ve done before. The change of stamp is meaningful because this is the first bronze cymbal I made in house with hammering machinery. It’s still mostly hand made and hammered. I guess you could say more “industrial”. North Kohala, the area Big Island Cymbals are manufactured was once a very industrial place and home to a few sugar mills. I believe the last one closed in 1974 in my area. I hear many stories from old time locals about what this place was and wasn’t such a short time ago. After the mills closed there was an exodus of people who left this area like a lot of places in the USA (and Hawaii being part of the USA is a conversation too). I’ve heard and read there was anywhere from 20,000-30,000 people around this area in its height. There was even 3 movie theaters (there are none now) but you can see remnants of these around my special community. Old equipment, old train tracks and much more. All built by the laborers that came from all around the world. What gives Hawaii its beauty is not just the landscape, but its people who worked very hard to make ends meet and create such a unique culture. Often times by large companies who took advantage of their labor. In effort to pay respect and tribute to this legacy, I thought it would be nice to have the sugar mill there.
